The Chelsea Flower Show is the jewel in the crown of the Royal Horticultural Society’s summer events. Held in the grounds of the Chelsea Hospital near the banks of the Thames in London it is the most prestigious horticultural show in the world. The preview day is by special invitation and is attended by members of the Royal Family as part of the royal patronage of the society.
The history of the show goes back to 1852 when it was held in the Royal Horticultural Society’s Gardens in Kensington and was called the Great Spring Show. It moved to its present site in 1913 following a show organised at the Chelsea Hospital by Sir Harry Veitch and has been called the Chelsea Flower Show ever since. Some 150,000 to 200,000 visitors from all over the world converge on this relatively small park and travelling to and from the venue in a chauffeur driven Mercedes or Lexus luxury is the only civilised way.
To wander through the many marquees and exhibits and the numerous garden layouts is a rare treat and there are experts in all aspects of gardening to help the keen gardener solve his or her problems. The designs of these gardens range from cutting edge through courtyard and city gardens to rustic and roof gardens and everything in between. When one remembers that all these displays have been built from scratch in a matter of days it is a testament of the hard work of everyone involved and part of what makes Chelsea such a special event. A good time to consider this is when enjoying the contents of a sumptuous hamper which will also provide the necessary energy to continue!
