| Of
all the locations that a luxury chauffer driven service could
arrive at, Silverstone is incomplete contrast to quiet luxury
that is a Mercedes Viano, S Class, Lexus LS430 or Mercedes E Class
saloon.
However much modern electronics controls the ride and performance
of an F1 race car nothing can take away the raw power that underlines
the sport nor the skill and stamina of the drivers. The intense
commitment and excitement of the Pits, the roar of the crowd and
the dedication of the fans sweeps everyone along to make it a
day to remember.
Silverstone is the home of British Grand Prix racing. Originally
a World War Two airfield the Royal Automobile Club came to an
arrangement with the Air Ministry after the war to lease the site
and transform it into a circuit ready for the 1948 RAC Grand Prix
in just two months. In those days there were no crash barriers
just straw bales and ropes. Cereals were still being grown on
the farm land in the centre of the course and at one point competitors
were actually racing towards one another! The winner of the inaugural
race was Luigi Villoresi in a Maserati at an average speed of
72mph. A far cry from today’s speeds! A couple of years
on saw the first British Grand Prix and the home of modern motor
racing was established.
Since that time the sport, and Silverstone itself, has changed
out of all recognition and, with the improved road access to the
site, a day out in comfort and the delights of a sumptuous picnic
is something well worth contemplating. Add to that the services
of a liveried chauffeur and a hamper with all the trimmings and
a day to remember is guaranteed.
